Music Gear Ideal For Different Stage Performances

Posted by Satrio Pratomo |

While having a live concert a musician needs a variety of stage music gear for his performance. And along with that he also needs various accessories which come with these instruments. The most commonly used music gear in a stage show are guitars, drum set, synthesizers, and other assorted instruments.

Stage music gear hold a great importance while performing on stage. While using a guitar on the stage, good quality amplifiers, microphones, feedback buster, strings, thumb pick, guitar tuner and many other accessories are required. Drums also require different gear for their best performance. The whole drum set consists of various types of cymbals and drums.

A brief description of guitar gear used on stage

Amplifiers - Traditional guitar amplifiers, with a clean, warm sound, a sharp treble roll-off at 5 kHz or less and bass roll off at 60-100 Hz, and often built-in reverb and tremolo units. There are hard rock-style guitar amplifiers, such as pre-amplification, controls, tone filters, and distortion effects that provide the amplifier's characteristic tone. Bass amplifiers, with extended bass response and tone controls, are optimized for bass guitars.

Microphones: Guitar microphones are intended to be used with the equipment made for microphones. The concept is very simple, a microphone is meant for a PA system and not for a guitar amplifier. The units will work to a degree in a guitar amplifier however to hear the full potential of the instrument, which connect any and all of the microphones into PA equipment.

Feedback Buster: The feedback buster reduces feedback from an acoustic or electric guitar. The feedback buster is inserted into the guitar's hole which allows greater sound control reducing unwanted feedback.

Strings: Guitar strings are available in different gages. The guitar strings are made of phosphor bronze. Different gages of strings are required for different compositions.

A brief description of drum gear used on stage

Cymbals: A drum set consists of different kinds of cymbals. These cymbals have different names and perform different functions. Some of the most commonly used cymbals are Hi hat, crash cymbal, ride cymbal, splash cymbal, china cymbal, sizzle cymbal and a few others.

The hi hat is a core element in the drum set because it is used as the primary time keeper. It is actually a pair of cymbals mounted on a specialized stand. The ride cymbal is the second most important time keeper of the cymbal types. It is typically the largest cymbal in your setup and has a nice open sound.

Ride cymbals vary in thickness, which has an influence on the attack, volume, and tone of the sound. Crash cymbals are designed to accent a rhythm. A Splash cymbal is the smallest of the crash family. They have the same purpose but their use is different.

Drums: Different types of drums are required to complete a drum set. The most commonly used drums in a drum set are bass drum, floor tom, snare drum and tom-toms.

A bass drum is a large drum that produces a note of low definite or indefinite pitch. The snare drum or side drum is a tubular drum made of wood or metal with skins, or heads, stretched over the top and bottom openings, and with a set of cords stretched across the bottom head. A floor tom is a double-headed tom-tom drum which usually stands on the floor on three legs. However, they can also be on a cymbal stand with a drum clamp.

A Cool Band Name

Posted by Satrio Pratomo |

Almost every musician comes to a point where he or she decides that it would be really great to start a band. The first thing that comes to mind about starting a band is - where are you going to get two solid guitarists, a drummer, someone who plays the bass guitar, someone on keyboards ... But it turns out that this is normally not really that much of a problem. If you are determined enough, sooner or later you will find a group of fellow musicians with similar taste in music and you will be ready to go.

But will you be really? I've often noticed that the biggest problem that a group of musicians faces is choosing a cool band name. You can't really just make something up - the name of the band is something that will stay with the band forever. And with a stupid name like The Cars you will probably never make it big. Wait, what? That already happened? Interesting.

Nonetheless, choosing a cool name is not just important for the appearance of the band, but it is something that should actually tell you something about the members of the band. If you manage to come up with a great story about how you got your band name in the first place, even better. This is the kind of stuff that the press likes.

So, let's take a look at what you can do to find a decent sounding band name.

If you are starting some rock or metal band, it's always great to get your clues in the mythology. You just need to browse the internet, read some stories about different Greek and Roman gods and goddesses and create a band name from the name of the god you like the most. Actually, if you play metal music - take a look at Scandinavian gods as well, they might be even more appropriate. Finland, Norway and the surrounding countries have got centuries of dark history, making it possible for you to find a great number of cool names for a metal band.

On the other side, you can get some ideas from various eastern cultures. Nirvana, rings a bell? Think about Chinese and Indian philosophy, read something that provides you with a detailed look at what they are all about and surely you will find enough material to come up with a great name. Siddharta Gautama? Siddharta sounds great to me.

You can as well chose some activity or an object that every member of the band likes and transform it. Make sure that it will still be possible to see the origin of the word, but at the same time you need to change it into a more melodic form and give it the right atmosphere.

If your music is more relaxed, you can try with a pun on some saying. Take an old wisdom and change it a bit, so it gets a funny meaning, but it still holds some intellectual value. There is a lot of room for experimentation. You can start with browsing internet archives of witty sayings.

With these few tips I wish that you will be able to find yourself a great band name - and of course, even more than that I wish that you really make it big with your band! Have fun!

How Do I Find My Singing Voice?

Posted by Satrio Pratomo |

No Expectations

Before you can find your singing voice you first have to stop having expectations about what you think you should sound like. You shouldn't think you will sound just like your favorite singer. And then you need to realize that that is a good thing. You should want to sing like yourself, not like anyone else.

Copying Others Is OK At First

It's OK to copy another singers style at first, but you don't want to rely on it too much. And it's very important not to just copy one style, you need to copy different styles so you don't get in a rut of trying to sound like anyone in particular. Eventually you want to stop copying, and start singing with your own voice. To do that well you will need quality singing lessons.

Singing Lessons

To truly find your own voice you will need to start practicing your singing. This doesn't mean just singing along with the radio. The problem with that activity is that the radio actually drowns out your voice! You need to be able to hear your own voice. It's a good idea to record yourself and play it back. You may be surprised by what you hear. And it will be a good way to document your progress.

You Will Improve With Quality Singing Methods

It is absolutely a myth that only some people can sing. Almost anyone can sing well if they put their mind to it and they learn using the proper singing techniques. The sad thing is that a lot of people get bad advice about how to sing and it actually causes more harm than good! It's important to use singing lessons that really work.

Get Quality Singing Methods. Singorama is highly recommended.

Ear Training can greatly improve your ability to sing in key.

Punk Rock - Its Message & Beginnings

Posted by Satrio Pratomo |

In the early 1970's, bubble gum rock was on its way out the door. Different types of music were beginning to blossom; fusion, funk, hard rock, and of course punk rock. While rock and roll had always represented rebellious human experience, punk rock took that mold and broke it over its knee. Punk might very well be characterized as the "most deviant part of the human soul" expressed as music.

While rebellion is not a new concept, punk was the first style of music to take raw, angry, atom bomb emotions and put it into music. In the early and mid 1970's, bands like Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The New York Dolls, and The Ramones set the anti- establishment mantra for a generation of teens. These punk rockers were famous for not giving a damn what magazines and media thought of them. As a matter of fact, they didn't seek media attention, the media sought them. A big theme in punk music is anarchy or rebellion against anything that seeks to clamp down and force people to behave instead of thinking for yourself.

This included, and still includes, rebellion against authority, class or caste, pretension, religious hatred, snobbery in general, or anything else that imposed too much dogma on humanity. How do you beat these idiotic ideas? By appealing to the most basic part of human beings and their self interests. An angry song stirs up people and makes them think, but it has to shock your conscience. Iggy Pop smeared peanut butter on himself at one concert while he sang. Sid Vicious cut himself during one show and bled all over.

While the song content was, and still is energetic, the music is fast, loud, unrefined, and in your face. Guitars squeal, drummers kick their drums over in fits of rage, and the bass holds it all together. In the late 1970's and early 1980's, bands like the Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Minor Threat, The Damned, and the Sex Pistols pushed the envelope that their predecessors licked and mailed without a stamp. Song titles like "Too Drunk to Fuck", "Bodies", and 'New Rose" dealt with the rawest side of human malfeasance. As a matter of fact, Jello Biafra, the former lead singer of the Dead Kennedy's was arrested and album artwork was seized. He contended that his prosecutors were trying to squelch free speech and intimidate musicians.

In the end, while some people do not like punk rock, it is the freest form of musical expression on planet earth and we owe some of our civil liberties to these bands for pushing political idiots back into their cellars. Luckily, we have punk today like Rancid, The Meat Puppets and Green Day to keep the spirit of punk alive and well. If you want to stand up and salute a punk rocker, just extend your middle finger at the next punk concert you attend, you will be thanked for your freedom of expression.

CD Maintenance – How to make sure you CD stays in good shape

Posted by Satrio Pratomo |

As we all know CDs & DVDs are prone to scratching, marking, cracking & breaking.

If you leave discs out near your PC or stereo, dust will settle or the data side will get scratched or marked. Now the best ways to prevent this happening are simple. They may sound straight forward but you’ll be surprised how many times CDs & DVDs are not protected properly. Following these simple steps will ensure you can use your CD's and DVD's for dvd copying and cd copying for years to come.

Keep your CDs in there Jewel Cases. If not there are PVC wallets which act as ample protection or Card Wallets. For you DVDs you must keep them in their DVD boxes or, as previously mentioned, PVC Wallets and Card wallets will do.

If your CD or DVD gets scratched, you may think that it’s damaged forever……..Wrong! The scratching on the surface of the disc simply fools the laser and makes it skip. Or, if you’re player has difficulty in loading the data, it’s due the surface being scratched and unable to read the digital data below.

However, do not panic! There are plenty of repair kits around to eliminate this problem and allow you to perfrom that all important cd copying or dvd copying. If you’ve thought you’ve lost a CD forever due to mark or scratch, think again!

These repair kits are a compound mixture of polish, which are specially designed for plastic (which discs are made up of). The mixture interacts with the polymer and allows the polish to get to work on the scratch. This polish will remove the majority of the disc that has been damaged and restore the music/data back to full playability.

Therefore, you revive your discs using these kits. However, I suggest you look after your CD or DVD by putting them back into their Jewel Case, DVD box, PVC Wallet or Card Wallet. Keep them in a dust-free environment or storage case.
Keep your discs playing longer...

When you remove your discs from their CD Jewel Cases or DVD box then you risk the centre-hub cracking or breaking. This will lead to disc failures. Especially for console playing or DVD films. Having looked around for a remedy to this common problem, we have found a solution...

It’s in the form of a metal reinforced centre-hub. It’s easy to attach and will reduce the stress that is normally applied when removing CDs or DVDs from Jewel Cases or DVD Boxes. This will prevent the discs from cracking at the centre. “Hurray!” I hear you say.

Becoming A Top Music Producer

Posted by Satrio Pratomo |

Music Production Software is properly in most studios the home of the studio, if it wasnt for Fruity Loops, Reason, Logic Pro or even Pro Tools many studios couldnt function. If your thinking of becoming a producer or starting a music production studio, the software is very important. Don't pick a software you feel is going to slow down your studio or is too much for your studio, pick what you feel is right and what you are comfortable with.

The most popular music production software out there right now is Fruity Loops, it is used by almost every new producer out there. It is very easily accessable and can be found floating about on the internet or bought from a local PC store. The reason fruity loops has done so well is because of the following reasons;

1: The Price - It's priced so reasonably it's affordable by anyone 2: Quality - What you get out of it is more than what you paid, the quality is amazing. You can add and change almost anything in fruity loops with Plugins. 3: User Ability - The software is so user friendly almost anybody can use it.

The mixture of those three things above make Fruity Loops so successful. So back to software, you should pick something that works well for you. Be comfortable within what ever software you use to produce music, it will show in your music production. You should pick something to suit your level and skills too, i wouldn't recommend a newbie producer to start with logic pro if they have never made a beat before. Do you research.
